This tarbiya is not specifically on a particular topic but inshallah a reminder to all of us in appreciating and thanking Allah that we are Muslims. In two ways, firstly that Allah has guided us, and secondly the actual beauty of Islam. Indeed, we should constantly be in awe of it.

All praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the most noble of the Prophets and Messengers

Someone recently told me that Islam is like the water of a river: it takes on the colour of the rocks or sand beneath, but its essence remains the same. The shaykh who first said this meant it as a metaphor for Islam’s ability to enter a land and manifest itself in the hearts of a people in all of its glory and splendor without eroding or disintegrating their underlying culture. Islam has never settled in a place except that it has enriched it and brought out the most beautiful elements of its people and culture.

In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful the Most Compassionate
All praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the most noble of the Prophets and Messengers

There once lived a man who had worshiped Allah for 70 years. He was known amongst the people for his piety and sincerity; so when their lands one day became drought-stricken, they decided to go to him and to ask him to pray for rain. The old man made du’a, yet no rain fell; he asked Allah again, but still to no avail. At this, the man began to weep and then he asked himself: “What is wrong with me that my heart is not pure?”

Upon uttering these words, Allah sent a prophet to this man to tell him: “Asking that question was better than all of your 70 years of worship.”

As we pass through this brief and busy life, we often forget to ask ourselves such simple yet profound questions. But if we think about our inevitable meeting with Allah, we realize that it will be “a Day in which neither wealth nor children shall avail, except the one who comes to Allah with a sound heart” (Surah Ash-Shu’ara: 88-89). We should all shudder when reflecting upon these words, for how many of us can truly say, “My heart is pure”?

All praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the most noble of the Prophets and Messengers

“O you who believe! be careful of (your duty to) Allah, and let every soul consider what it has sent on for the morrow, and be careful of (your duty to) Allah; surely Allah is Aware of what you do.”
(Surat Al-Hashr, 59:18)

What have we presented for tomorrow, for the Day that we will be judged? On the Day of Judgment, as we all know, all of humanity will be desperately trying to find all the deeds they did for the sake of God. This begs the question, what category of people will we be in? Those who have nothing to show for all our years on earth, or those who will stand before Allah and say “My Lord, I did this for you?”
